Base Yourself On The Dal

Unpack once. Wake on the water, drive out to Gulmarg or Pahalgam for the day, and come back to the same lamp-lit room. Srinagar is the practical base for the whole valley — and the best part of it.

  • Shikara on the Dal; houseboat night on request
  • Nishat, Shalimar & Chashme Shahi gardens

Why Srinagar

One base beats four hotels.

Kashmir looks compact on a map and is not. Gulmarg, Sonmarg and Pahalgam sit at three corners of the valley, and the roads between them run back through Srinagar anyway. Chasing a night in each means packing every morning and arriving after dark.

Stay on the Dal instead. Every valley is a day trip, the drive is the same distance either way, and at the end of it there is a shikara waiting and a room you already know. It costs less, too — one hotel rate, negotiated once.

  • Roads to every valley radiate from Srinagar
  • One hotel rate instead of three
  • Weather changes plans without changing hotels
  • Evenings on the boulevard, not in a car

Day Trips From Srinagar

Three valleys, all within a morning's drive

Distances are real and the roads are mountain roads. These are the times we actually plan around, not the ones a map app promises.

Gulmarg gondola cable car above snow-covered slopes

Srinagar to Gulmarg

52 km · 2 hrs each way

The gondola lifts you from 2,650 m to Kongdoori, and in a second stage to Apharwat at 3,980 m — snow on the ground there even in June. Meadow and wildflowers in summer; a working ski resort from December.

Snow-capped mountains above the river at Sonmarg

Srinagar to Sonmarg

80 km · 2.5 hrs each way

The meadow of gold, at the mouth of the Zojila pass. A pony or a stiff walk takes you to Thajiwas Glacier. The road closes under snow, usually from late November until April — we check before we promise it.

The Lidder river in the green Pahalgam valley

Srinagar to Pahalgam

90 km · 2.5 hrs each way

The Lidder comes down cold and loud from the Kolahoi glacier. Betaab Valley, Aru and Chandanwari are the reason to come. Long as a day trip — most people give it a night.

Without Leaving The City

Srinagar itself is worth two days

The price moves with season and hotel category — a deluxe houseboat in October costs more than a good hotel in February. Send us your dates and we will quote the exact figure.
